Free Pardon Applications

I was convicted of a felony for identity theft but it was less than a $1000.00 that was my first offense ever, I was not told by the lawyer that is was going to be a felony. If I knew I would have fought the charge. It happened in 2008 I didn’t hear about it until 2009 which I thought was strange, I just want to know why do first time offenders who never been in trouble with the law gets a felony on their first charge of less than the required amount for that state can anyone explain that to me
