My son was arrested approximately 10 years ago for eating his lunch in outdoor cafe at Central Market with some items in his cart. (One must pay for items before entering cafe, but he did not notice signs.)  His attorney wanted $4,000 to get rid of it, but we did not have the money, so we just paid the fine.  Now he is having trouble getting work because of his record.  (No other history of arrest.)  Is there anything we can do?  It is devastating for him.

I am sorry to hear about your son's situation.   I am not aware of a way to set-aside a conviction unless the person completed probation.
