In 1995 I was charged with domestic violence in Michigan. At the time I was stationed in Ft.Bragg, NC.  I was separated from my wife at the time and had come home to pick our kids up for the holidays, and the situation occurred. Fast forward 13yrs, I had obtained a purchase permit for a handgun, which I received as a gift. At the time it was ok for me to have the weapon. I went to purchase another handgun the fall of 2010 and was told by the sheriffs dept that I no longer could obtain a handgun permit due to offense in 1995, since Gov Granholm signed a bill in 09 banning individuals of DV Crimes from getting them.  My question is can i get around that since my offense had been 15 years ago?
