Can I become a teacher if I have a criminal record? Can schools see it if I get my record sealed?

Dear Jeremy,

This is a very tricky question. Assuming your record is in Illinois, a sealed record just means that it is closed off from the public. The state police still has your record. Unfortunately, I do not know for certain how schools do background checks and if they have access to sealed records. The application should be very clear about what the school can access. When in doubt, just ask the school. (Also, are you sure you cannot expunge your record?)
