The internet is a great way to find an attorney who can expunge or seal your criminal record at an affordable price. However, there are also several scam sites posing as attorneys. They call themselves "form processors," "paralegals," or a "legal service;" some go as far as to lie and say they are attorneys. Do not allow non-attorneys to take your money, waste your time, access your confidential information, let you become a victim of identity theft or blow what might be your only chance to clear your criminal record.

Fortunately, it is easy to verify you are working with a real attorney who is licensed and regulated by the state. See this list of top-rated expungement attorneys.
How To Spot Rip-Off Expungement and Record Sealing Sites
Look for these signs that the site may be a scam.
- It is a "paralegal" or "form processor" that is giving you advice.
- They claim to "waive attorneys fees" when they have no attorneys.
- They are not licensed to practice law in your state.
- They charge you extra charges to START your case in less than 8 weeks.
- They are just going to send you forms and then leave you alone to fight the District Attorney, answer questions from the court, put together evidence and pay all filing fees.
- The operation is run out of a Post Office box.
- The operation is based in Kentucky (several scam sites are run out of Kentucky).
- There is no money back guarantee if your case is denied.
- Their Better Business Bureau record shows dozens of complaints, like this one http://www.lexington.bbb.org/commonreport.html?compid=152908780
- They do not have a physical address in the state where you live or where your case is.
- They want to charge you to apply for a pardon (Nationwide, about 1 in 50,000 pardons get granted. If someone wants to charge you for a pardon, they are probably more interested in your money than helping you).
